Chief of Police Barry Rountree is a twenty-six year veteran of the Winston-Salem Police Department. He is the first afro american man to lead the Winston-Salem Police Department and the 14th police chief in the city’s 100-year history. He leads a department with a $62 million budget and 569 sworn officers and 159 civilians. Chief Rountree was awarded the Advanced Law Enforcement Certificate by the Criminal Justice Education and Standards Training Commission.
He is a State-certified Basic Law Enforcement General Instructor, and a graduate of the 31st session of the Administrative Officers Management Program at NC State University. He completed the Municipal Administration Program at UNC-CH. Chief Rountree serves on numerous boards in the community. He holds a BA from Winston-Salem State University and a Master’s in Public Affairs from UNC-G.
