Coach William “Bill” Hayes is an athlete, coach, educator, administrator and champion for young people. He began coaching at the high school level and accepted his first college position as running back coach at Wake Forest University. This made him the first African American coach in the Atlantic Coast Conference. As head football coach at Winston-Salem State University and NC A&T University he accumulated a 195-104-2 overall record. He has more career victories (195) than any other college football head coach in the state of NC. 

He has been inducted into the halls of fame of NCCU, WSSU, and the CIAA. In addition to football, he has a passion for the betterment of America’s youth. To this end, he has given outstanding, committed service to the Boy Scouts of America where he received the Silver Beaver Award and the Silver Antelope Award. He is an alumnus of North Carolina Central University.
